Health Equity Internship

Description
The Health Equity Internship is designed to prepare students to create a social impact practice, improve healthcare delivery in underserved communities, and develop skills in organization, administration, communication, marketing, and patient care. Interns will work closely with practice founders, Dedra Beckles, MD and Adriana Trent, PhD as they use their integrated, holistic approach to health and wellness within racially segregated communities. Summary
The Health Equity Intern will work alongside practice founders to support the growth of their social impact practice. Interns will receive mentoring with ongoing guidance and preparation for careers in public health and social entrepreneurship. The Summer/Fall 2022 Internship dates are from July 1 through December 30. This is a hybrid opportunity (virtual & in-person) with an expectation of 10 hours per week. The ideal candidate possesses an interest in public health and/or health sciences and is passionate about health equity. They must be willing and have the capacity to learn quickly, apply new knowledge, and take on multiple responsibilities. We are looking for an energetic self-starter with excellent written and oral communication abilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate effective leadership and communication skills needed to build and maintain a practice.
  • Understand the importance of integrated physical, mental, and social health care in addressing health inequities.
  • Complete and secure social impact grants.
  • Establish and collaborate with community partnerships to address social determinants of health.
  • Discover the inner workings of a clinical practice including:
    • Office organization
    • Practice operation & practice management
    • Office management
    • Marketing
    • Membership growth, outreach, and retention

Responsibilities

  • Attend team meetings and collaborate with co-founders to create social impact initiatives promoting health equity
  • Data collection and analysis of health outcome measures in underserved populations
  • Building community partnerships to help address the social health needs of the population
  • Marketing and other patient growth activities
  • Patient outreach and education activities
  • Creation of patient focused health equity projects ranging from disease prevention to nutrition to mental health advocacy

Qualifications

  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Interested in public health and/or health sciences and is passionate about health equity.
  • Must be available at least 10 hours per week (with class schedule flexibility).
  • Must be willing and have the capacity to learn quickly, apply new knowledge, and take on multiple responsibilities.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrate integrity, take initiative, and work well as part of a team.
  • Experience working with vulnerable individuals and diverse communities (e.g. racially and socioeconomically disadvantaged) preferred but not required.
  • Coursework in Public Health/Community Medicine is a plus.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without future visa sponsorship requirements.
